Project Location:
Departments of La Guajira and Cesar.
Colombia
Background:
Ongoing political and socio-economic developments in Venezuela have led to an estimated 3.7 million Venezuelans migrating into neighboring countries and beyond. By the beginning of 2019, it was estimated that 1.3 million Venezuelans were in Colombia.
Even with International Organization for Migration (IOM) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) support, the Government of Colombia still does not have the capacity to meet basic food, water, sanitation, health, household supplies, education, livelihoods, protection, and shelter needs. NGOs can provide services to fill these gaps and support life-saving assistance.
Objectives:
To expand the cash program Mercy Corps already have in place in the departments of La Guajira and Cesar, with multi-purpose cash assistance over a 90-day period.
Mercy Corps’ assessments show that most beneficiaries know which basic needs they must pay to live healthy lives, but they lack the financial ability to meet these needs.
This problem is particularly acute upon arrival in Colombia.
Beneficiaries:
This donation will help reach 100 Venezuelan families refugees with a direct cash distribution. The amount of support varies according to the characteristics of the family.
